Correspondence and documents relating to the sale of the Mariposa Estate in Mariposa County, Calif., by John C. Frémont. Correspondence consists of seven letters exchanged between U.S. District Attorney Phillip R. Fendall; Thomas Hart Benton, who handled the legal arrangements for the sale; and various lawyers and public figures representing Benton and the potential buyer, Thomas Denny Sargent. Documents consist of a handwritten copy of an agreement subjecting the sale of the Mariposa Estate to Col. Frémont's right of renunciation; and a draft of an agreement concerning modifications and additions to the former document, as well as provisions for payments.
